About Torrent Portable Misting Fan

What is the difference between CoolSpace evaporative coolers and Torrent mobile misting fans?

In CoolSpace evaporative cooling products, evaporation occurs on a specifically engineered media pad at the intake side of the fan. This design decreases discharge air temperature without introducing water droplets into the discharge airstream. In Torrent mobile misting fans, water is atomized at the fan discharge and carried by the high velocity discharge airstream. These small water droplets can evaporate to reduce the airstream temperature but can also be deposited on people’s skin, further enhancing natural body cooling processes. Misting cooling provides more direct cooling effects to occupants in the immediate area of the Torrent fan but does utilize water droplets that can be undesirable in some applications.

The pump or fan will not start.
  • Make sure power cord is plugged in.
  • Make sure pump or fan is turned on.
  • Check circuit breaker or fuse panel for functionality.
  • Make sure supply power is adequate and functional. Refer to the cooler’s operation and maintenance manual for electrical requirements.
  • Check cooler’s water level. Pump automatically shuts off if water level is too low. Pump may take up to five minutes to reset after cooler is refilled.
  • Make sure there are no obstructions in fan assembly or blades.
  • Check extension cord gauge. Refer to the cooler’s operation and maintenance manual for electrical requirements.
Water is not flowing into the reservoir.
Check float screen and clean if needed. If water is still not flowing, please give us a call at

How do you drain it?

Easily accessible plug with tethered cap on the bottom of the unit, located a few inches inboard and centered between the two front casters.

Can the fan be used without the misting?

Yes, the fan is an adaptable cooling solution and is a great product with or without the misting features activated to meet cooling needs regardless of the environment.

Will the reservoir overfill?

The integrated float valve will prevent the unit from overfilling as long as the inlet water pressure is less than the maximum allowed. If the float valve were to fail, all electronics and components are sealed and protected. A weep hole on the front of the unit indicates when the reservoir is full and is being overfilled.

Can it be used indoors?

Yes, but care should be taken to ensure that potential water accumulation on surfaces nearest the fan discharge is not a concern. Well-ventilated spaces also ensure that the atomized water can evaporate and deliver cooling effects most effectively.

Will this cool my whole space?

Torrent is designed as a mobile spot-cooling misting fan with the most direct cooling potential of any BAF product. It is not designed to replace air conditioning or cool large spaces, but excels at targeting occupants in its discharge area to improve comfort, safety, and productivity.

Can I adjust the amount of mist?

BAF prioritized simple operation and controls such that the mist is appropriate for all potential fan speeds. The amount of mist cannot be adjusted and is actuated by a single on/off switch. Water consumption will range from 1.89 to 2.27 liters per hour.

How often do I need to clean the unit?

Big Ass fans has guidelines in the operations and maintenance document for monthly and quarterly cleaning/maintenance checks. The operations manual for Torrent is linked here.

Can this be stored outside?

While suitable for continuous use outside, BAF recommends storing the product in an indoor environment or a covered outdoor environment to reduce unnecessary exposure to elements.
