About i6

What type of ceiling outlet box should I use to hang my i6 fan?

We recommend a standard UL-listed, fan-rated outlet box be used and installed onto a beam or joist. The outlet box should be marked acceptable for fan support of 70 lb (31.8 kg) or less. Most outlet boxes commonly used for hanging light fixtures are not rated for fan support and may need to be replaced.

I have a product that’s similar to this one, but I can’t seem to find the warranty. What should I do?

My remote is not controlling my fan.

Note: Our Bluetooth remotes are not universally programmed, so please make sure the remote you are using is paired with the fan you are attempting to control. For more information, see How do I connect a Bluetooth remote to my fan? Our IR remotes (i6 fans only) are universally programmed, so no “pairing” is required.

Make sure the clear plastic tab has been removed from the remote’s battery cover, a working battery is installed, and you are within range of the fan you are attempting to control. If the remote still does not work, here are some things to try:

  1. Verify that the fan is receiving power by power cycling the fan. To do this:
    1. Turn off power to the fan via a standard on/off wall switch or the breaker if a standard wall switch is not applicable.
    2. Wait a few moments, and then restore power.
  2. The fan will beep once as it powers on (unless you have disabled beeps in the Big Ass Fans app) and the LED indicator on the bottom of the fan may illuminate.
    1. If you do not hear a beep, verify that the fan is wired correctly as shown in the installation guide.
    2. If you do hear the fan beep during a power cycle, stand directly beneath the fan and attempt to use the remote. Depending on the fan height and installation location, remote range can vary.
  3. Re-pair the remote with the fan (Bluetooth remote only). To do this:
    1. Hold the remote close to the fan you want it to control.
    2. Press and hold the fan power and – (minus) buttons on the remote (this will clear all previous pairings).
    3. Press any button.
    4. The LEDs on the remote will cycle while pairing is in progress. When the LEDs turn off, pairing is complete.

If you’ve followed these steps and are still unable to use your remote, please contact Customer Service.

How do I reboot (power cycle) my fan using the remote?
  1. Press and hold the fan power button on the remote for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, the fan will beep and its LED indicator will illuminate.
  2. Press the fan power button again, then release. The fan will beep and reboot.
What do the Auto buttons on the remote and in the app do?

The Auto buttons on the remote and in the Big Ass Fans app enable motion sensing and automatic speed adjustment.

When you press the fan or light Auto button, the fan or light will automatically turn on when motion is detected and off when motion is no longer detected. The fan will also make automatic speed adjustments as room conditions change. When Auto is enabled, the white LED on the remote Auto button is illuminated.

By default, Auto mode responds to motion and adjusts fan speed according to factory-programmed settings. You can use the motion and ideal temperature controls in the Big Ass Fans app to adjust your Auto preferences.

To disable Auto mode, press the Auto button on the remote or tap AUTO on the fan/light control screen in the app. When Auto is disabled, the white LED on the remote Auto button is turned off.

What is Return to Auto?

Even when you want your fan and light to work automatically most of the time, there may be situations where you need to make a manual adjustment (e.g. turning the fan up to cool off after a jog or turning the light off when watching a movie).

Instead of disabling Auto when you make a change, Return to Auto waits for you to leave the room and then re-enables Auto to get your fan back to keeping you comfortable while saving energy.*

To enable Return to Auto:

  1. In the Big Ass Fans app, tap a fan on the Home screen, and then tap.
  2. Make sure the Fan or Light tab (depending on which you want to set) is selected at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap Return to Auto.
  4. Toggle Return to Auto to enable it.
  5. Use the Return After selector to choose the amount of time the fan waits after you leave the room before re-enabling Auto.

* If Auto is manually turned off by pressing the AUTO button on the Bluetooth remote or in the app, Return to Auto will not turn it back on.

How do I reverse my fan?

Note: Big Ass Fans recommends never reversing your fan—just run it at a slow forward speed during the winter to keep your space evenly comfortable from floor to ceiling. Go here to learn more about destratification.

  1. From the Big Ass Fans app Home screen, tap the fan you wish to reverse.
  2. Tapat the bottom of the screen.
  3. Toggle the Reverse switch to enable or disable reverse.
How do I change the maximum dim-to-warm color temperature?

To change the maximum color temperature used by the fan light’s Dim-to-Warm feature:

  1. Open the Big Ass Fans app and select the light you want to customize.
  2. Tapat the bottom of the screen, and then turn on Dim-to-Warm (if not already on).
  3. Return to the light control screen and set the light to maximum brightness.
  4. Tap the(color temperature) button at the bottom of the screen and select your preferred color temperature.

The light will now shift between a warm yellow color at the dimmest setting and your selected color temperature at the brightest setting.

Nest: How do I connect my Haiku fan to my Nest thermostat?

Previously, Haiku fans featured the ability to integrate directly with Nest products through the “Works With Nest” program. As of August 31, 2019, Google has terminated this program and now requires all new Nest owners to use a Google account, which does not currently offer Nest integration with Big Ass fans.

Nest: I’ve connected my Haiku fan with my Nest thermostat. What do I do now?

To take full advantage of your smart thermostat pairing, you may want to enable “Works with Nest” mode.

  1. Open the Haiku Home app and select the room containing the fan that is connected to your Nest.
  2. Tap the  icon.
  3. Under the Fan heading, change the Auto Comfort settings to “Works with Nest.”

When this setting is active, the appropriate Smart Mode will be automatically enabled based on the thermostat’s setting. For example, if the thermostat is set to cooling mode, the paired fan will automatically use its Smarter Cooling setting.

When set to “Works with Nest” mode, your fan will automatically adjust its speed to help your HVAC system keep you comfortable while lowering energy costs.

Big Ass fan integration with Nest devices is no longer supported. To learn more about Google’s termination of the “Works With Nest” program, click here.

Nest: I have multiple Haiku fans. Can I change which fan is paired with my Nest thermostat?

Yes, you can change which fan is paired with a thermostat.

  1. Open the Haiku Home app, tap , and select Smart Home Integration.
  2. Under the Thermostat Integrations heading, tap the Nest icon. You will see each Nest thermostat that is linked to your account.
  3. Select the thermostat you wish to update from the list.
  4. Select the Haiku fan you’d like to pair with this thermostat, then tap the Next button.
  5. Set your ideal temperature and min/max speeds, tap Next, then tap Done.

Big Ass fan integration with Nest devices is no longer supported. To learn more about Google’s termination of the “Works With Nest” program, click here.

Nest: Can my Nest thermostat control more than one Haiku fan?

Yes. Although only one fan can be connected directly to your Nest thermostat, all fans assigned to the connected fan’s Room in the Haiku Home app will operate simultaneously.

For example, if you have two fans assigned to “Living Room” in the Haiku Home app, connecting either of those fans to your Nest will result in both of them being controlled by the thermostat.

To adjust your Room settings:

IOS

  1. Tap  in the Haiku Home app and select Rooms and Devices.
  2. Tap Edit and drag to assign your fans to the desired Rooms.
  3. Tap Done to save changes.

Trouble with Something Else

My i6 fan is wobbling during operation.

All fans:

  • Verify that the outlet box or mounting structure is suitable for fan support. For outlet box installations, we recommend a standard UL-listed, fan-rated outlet box be used and installed onto a beam or joist. The outlet box should be marked acceptable for fan support of 70 lb (31.8 kg) or less. Most outlet boxes commonly used for hanging light fixtures are not rated for fan support and may need to be replaced.
  • Make sure the airfoil screws are securely tightened. Tighten the six airfoil screws on the bottom of the fan according to the numbered sequence. When finished, repeat the tightening sequence.
  • Make sure all mounting hardware is secure and tight.
  • If an airfoil is damaged, contact Customer Service. Airfoils must be replaced as a set. Do not replace individual airfoils.

Universal Mount fans:

  • Make sure the stabilizer is installed at the top of the extension tube and is seated in the correct position. See the installation guide for details.
  • Make sure the mounting ball at the top of the extension tube is properly seated in the mounting bracket with the rib in the mounting bracket seated in the slot in the mounting ball.
  • If guy wires were installed, confirm proper installation. If guy wires were not installed, contact Customer Service.
My fan will not start.
  • Make sure your fan is receiving power.
  • Verify supply power is adequate. Check your circuit breaker or fuse and wall switch for functionality.
  • Make sure all wires are securely connected and that the fan is properly wired and grounded.
  • Make sure the airfoils are securely tightened. On the bottom of the fan, check the tabs next to airfoil screw holes 1 and 5. The tabs should be flush with the tab openings as shown on the right. If they are not, tighten the six airfoil screws according to the numbered sequence. Repeat the tightening sequence until the tabs are flush with the openings.
My fan is noisy during operation.
  • Check all hardware. If loose, tighten. If you are unsure of how to do this, refer to the fan installation guide.
  • Bring the fan to a complete stop. Gently turn the airfoils by hand, making sure there are no fan parts rubbing on the motor unit when the fan rotates.
