About ShopFan Gen 3
Do I need to install guy wires with my ShopFan?
Yes, guy wires are required if:
- The fan is installed outdoors
- The fan is near fixtures or exposed to high wind
What kind of electrical circuit do I need for installation?
Each fan requires a dedicated overcurrent-protected circuit:
- 15 A @ 100–120 VAC, single-phase
Refer to NEC Article 430 and local codes for conductor sizing and protection requirements.
Can I mount ShopFan to any beam or structure?
ShopFan can be mounted to:
- I-beams (with restrictions)
- Bar joists (with angle iron)
- Solid beams and Z-purlins (with special kits)
However, fabricated I-beams and strut channels (Unistrut) are not recommended unless approved by a structural engineer.
How do I maintain my ShopFan?
Big Ass Fans recommends:
- An annual inspection of hardware, guy wires, and safety cables
- Checking for oil leaks, cracks, or corrosion
- Ensuring proper torque on bolts and fasteners
- Cleaning with non-chlorine-based degreasers
See the full Annual Maintenance Checklist in the installation guide.
What should I do if my fan doesn’t start after installation?
- Check all power and control wiring for secure connections
- Ensure the circuit is providing the correct voltage and amperage
- Make sure any fire relay wiring is properly configured
